Hello All!

Help fund-raise for our Youth Services! If you have any gently used or new items that you would like to donate, please drop them off at any of the borough main branches (Central, Flushing, Brooklyn)!

We're accepting any jewelry, clothing, electronics, accessories, etc. Every little bit helps!

Donations will be used to fund-raise at the Hester Street Fair on July 18, 2010 from 10 AM - 9 PM.

If you don't have any donations but would like to help out, stop by and see if there are any items you would like to purchase!

CPC Volunteers!

If you missed this past Wednesday's Volunteer Orientation but still want to be a volunteer, don't be discouraged!

A make-up Orientation will be this coming Monday, June 28th, 2010. It'll be at CPC Central (150 Elizabeth St., Lower Level) at 2:00 PM.

This is for all those interested in volunteering throughout the summer, applicants for the Summer Youth Volunteer Leadership Program, and those who just want to volunteer/walk for the Walk-A-Thon.

If you already came to Orientation and are still a little confused as to when you're coming in, we've sent out Volunteer schedules to those who have already filled out the availability time sheet. Those that haven't, please come in to fill one out or e-mail us with your availability. You do NOT have to show up to the make-up Orientation.

CPC YOUTH SERVICES

In 1971, CPC launched its seminal Project Reach program to provide youth development services to at-risk youth Chinese immigrant youth. Immigrant families hope the second generation will achieve the American dream that induced them to emigrate. But these youth face many barriers in the pursuit of this dream that they cannot overcome on their own. CPC has developed a comprehensive suite of educational, vocational, and youth development programs that promote leadership development, career skills, social skills, academic success, and community involvement. Youth development programs also build self-confidence, help youth develop a sense of identity, and teach diversity awareness and team-building to enable youth to overcome discrimination and cope with conflict in school and society at large. Whether they are acquiring job skills through summer employment or school-year internships, touring university campuses, volunteering to clean up city parks, or performing dance routines at community events, our youth form strong relationships with peers and mentors in safe and supportive environment.

Project REACH:
Trains high-risk youth on how to help their peers deal with HIV/AIDS, homosexuality and homophobia, and discrimination. Through a structured training curriculum, youth develop leadership skills, and eventually train their peers through workshops on self assertiveness, identity and advocacy.

Community Walks Today for the Youth of Tomorrow

The Chinese-American Planning Council is hosting its biennial Walk-a-thon this summer on Saturday, July 31st!

Due to severe City and State budget cuts, many of CPC's youth programs are being cut this year, increasing the number of school-age children left without a place to go once school is out. Please help support our cause and keep our youths off the streets! Our Walk-a-thon's goal this year is to help raise awareness and funding for the children.

We encourage everyone to please help fund-raise for this cause.

"The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC), is one of the largest Asian-American non-profit organizations in the United States. We provide a multitude of social services, such as day care, workforce development, youth and senior citizen services. Our services are crucial to the wellbeing of New York City's residents who use our services. However, due to budget cuts from federal, state and local governments, we find ourselves in a position where we cannot serve our clients at the levels they expect from us.

Our youth services division has suffered the brunt of the budget cuts. For example, in the past, CPC has been able to secure 2,000 jobs through the Summer Youth Employment Program. This year, we are only able to provide 500 positions. Also, Beacons, school-based community centers that provide after-school and other educational services, are facing 17% cuts. [The Department of Youth and Community Development is closing 33 free after-school programs ] To help alleviate the budgetary squeeze, we are dedicating our biennial walk-a-thon to raise funds for the youth and to bring attention to the budget cuts and their effects on our community. Although we are based in Chinatown, we serve all of New York City's youth. Our walkathon, 'Community Walks Today for Youth of Tomorrow,' will be held on July 31, 2010 at Columbus Park in Chinatown. Our goal is to fund-raise $200,000 and have over 5000 participants." - Johnson Lin
